Composting Barns or ‘Mootels’ as they are colloquially known are the next evolution in Dairy Shelters. These soft floor barns provide a clean and warm area for your herd to sleep in, with the floor base (often sawdust or woodchip) absorbing and composting the effluent excreted. This keeps the bedding dry and the herd comfortable & happy. Once the bedding has composted down, it can be removed and used as a fertiliser that will break down quickly – re-distributing nutrients back into the soil.
Here at Goodwood we have a strong focus on Sustainability and champion the re-cycling, re-use or re-purposing of woodwaste where possible. We love to see examples of sustainable innovation in other local industry such as Composting Barns and are looking to support trial and set-up of these ‘Mootels’ locally.
